Due to the construction of an extension building the outdoor areas of the Friedrich-Engels-Secondary-School had to be redesigned: The additional construction of the school canteen, of new classrooms and specialist rooms required a new integration into the campus that included an old Gründerzeit-style building and an annex from the 1970s. With the unsealing of the school yard and the creation of generous planting areas, the outdoor areas were modernized and the property´s characteristics as a site of education became visible. New bicycle stands were built, numerous areas for the 1,300 pupils to linger and sit in their off-time and new playground facilities were created. For the extension and the sealed coverings seepage surfaces were built. A central waste site was constructed, and the old building was connected to the new extension building with barrier-free access .
