The government funded conversion of the former Franz-Fühmann School into the Central District Library "Pablo Neruda" which was part of the Urban Redevelopment Program East enormously improved this education location at Frankfurter Allee 14a. This brought along new stimuli for the sustainable development of the entire district. The library opened in 2010, a new day care center, the Georg-Friedrich-Händel-High School and the new auditorium, which will be completed by 2017, are the core of the new centre of culture and education in Friedrichshain. The intention of the competition process from 2013 was to strengthen its urban context by a general planning that would embrace all of the open spaces.
The open spaces will be reconstructed within four phases and finished by 2019. With the completion of the first phase in May 2014, the newly designed school playing areas and the sports facilities were handed over to the high school. In addition to benches and pedestals students can now use a 100m running track and a long jump facility (all with a light gray plastic coating), a challenging climbing course, a motor skill track and table tennis. Referring to the materials and colours of the surrounding buildings materials were predominantly chosen in yellowish and gray tones that blend harmoniously.
